Set up in 2001, the .NAME generic domain name extension is the sole TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other labels people are famous by. At first, solely 3rd-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to reserve john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already acquired third-level domain names remained running.
